AbstractOn June 22, 2009, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in the case "Forest Grove School District v. T.A." (hereafter "Forest Grove"). In "Forest Grove," the High Court answered the question of whether the parents of students with disabilities are entitled to reimbursement for the costs associated with placing their child in a private school placement if the child never received special education services from the public schools. In this article, the authors examine the Supreme Court's ruling in "Forest Grove." First, the authors address the issues that arise when parents of students with disabilities unilaterally place their children in private schools or residential settings because they believe a school district has not provided a free, appropriate public education (FAPE). Next they discuss the relevant history of the "Forest Grove" case, summarize the facts of the case, and analyze the reasoning of the majority and dissenting opinions in the Supreme Court's decision. They conclude by summarizing the implications of the "Forest Grove" decision to special educators and to the parents and children served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). (ERIC).
