AbstractAs physical education programs are required to be more accountable in demonstrating the positive benefits they provide for their students, it becomes more important for physical educators to be able to provide evidence that their students are changing in positive ways. Assessment is an integral part of the teaching/learning cycle. Teaching is assessed through measurement and evaluation--to see if objectives are being met. Excel can help with that. The Excel program that comes standard on most computers will do many statistical functions almost effortlessly, making it quite simple to analyze the data that many physical education teachers are already collecting. Statistically measured improvement of students' physical fitness levels, as well as measured improvement of physical skills, can provide strong support for physical education programs. In this article, the author explains how to use Excel for two statistical functions: (1) the mean; and (2) the "t" test. Using these statistics to analyze data can be helpful in program assessment and in showing principals, parents, and school board members how physical education students are improving.
