Abstract | Through in-depth research into the lives of African Americans, playwright Dr. Amanda Kemp critically engages the narratives, texts, and stories that are often lost within dominant community and national narratives. The framework for her work is Black feminism and performance theory. Kemp and her drama group, Theatre for Transformation, produce plays that explore the everyday lives and choices of ordinary people, often caught up in larger events. After an introduction to learning in archives, this chapter will unfold in a series of questions and answers in a conversation between the authors, a format that offers an immediacy not possible in more traditional academic writing, and one that mirrors the dialogic approach that Kemp uses with her writing, revision, and performance process.
