Abstract | The educational success of Latino students has never been a more pressing issue. As of July 2001, people of Hispanic origin are the second largest racial/ethnic group in the United States and continue to be the fastest growing group in the United States. Despite this, there is little research on the behavior of Latino students--possibly because they are underrepresented in programs for students with emotional disturbance (ED). However, Latino youth are overrepresented in juvenile correctional facilities at more than 5 times their rate in ED programs and 3 times their rate in the general population. This article presents a framework for addressing the needs of Latino students from the perspective of an integrated system involving the individual and his or her environment. (Contains 1 figure.)
