| Abstract | The author brings together the question posed in Kathryn Ecclestone's article in last month's "Adults Learning--"Where's the vision?"--and the letter from Wayne Bennett, General Manager of Dillington House, about the threat to residential colleges. The author brings out some of the connections between them and issues surrounding adult community work: basic skills, non-accredited courses and this curious pre-occupation with targets and accredited work. Balance and concern for the education of "all the people" are being lost in the relentless push towards accreditation. The author stresses that lifelong education is about more than the acquisition of certificates. It is time to look more fully and favourably upon the nonaccredited forms of education. They are the starting gate for many, the pathways of individual educational progress, the open routes from which levels of qualification are achieved later. (ERIC). |
