Abstract | This article describes the challenges Sub-Saharan African women, including the author, have experienced in their pursuit of graduate studies in the United States and successful strategies that have been adopted. The author begins with a brief overview of the education of girls and women in Sub-Saharan African countries. She then explores the successes of women in achieving their learning goals by sharing her story of challenges and successes. In addition, she examines some narratives of African women as they negotiate their identity as custodians of African cultures, as well as their transformational learning as a framework for change. The author concludes with a discussion of how African educational policies might be changed to provide women with more opportunities in higher education and what US universities' educators might do to support African women in their studies.
