Abstract	The landscape of rural America is changing. Rural areas have been described as the country's "bread basket"--feeding citizens of the United States and many countries abroad. But these areas are struggling with declining crop prices, escalating production costs, and increased competition from overseas producers. Where amber waves of grain, forests thick with timber, orchards ripe with apples, and fields flush with peas and asparagus once reigned, these staples are now being replaced in many rural areas with new cash-friendly crops. American farmers and small business owners have used their moxie to turn a decline in traditional crops into an opportunity for enhanced prosperity and economic diversification. Rather than abdicate their control over their land and livelihood, they have chosen to innovate. The wine industry is redefining the economies in many rural areas across Washington and Oregon. The cultivation of wine grapes and the development of small, family-owned wineries have become a viable and increasingly valuable business enterprise. This article presents a story of how one rural community in southeastern Washington has embraced change, created additional family living-wage jobs, and further diversified its economy. (ERIC).
