AbstractRussian schools differ widely in the quality of education they provide and in the socioeconomic status of the students they teach. More needs to be done to provide quality education for children from all social strata, including provision of remedial or extra tutoring where necessary. General school education provides the basic body of knowledge that an individual needs to have in future life, which includes moving on to the next levels of education. One factor of the quality of general education is the differentiation of schools: to a large extent the quality of the education that can be acquired determines the individual's chances of achieving a better or a worse educational trajectory. Two groups are singled out: "elite schools" (those with "enhanced" status) and the so-called "ordinary schools" (with or without specialization). The empirical basis of this article consists of materials from a monitoring survey designed to assess the accessibility of a complete general secondary education; the survey was carried out in 2005 and 2006 by the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were obtained for three regions: Samara and Voronezh oblasts and the Republic of Chuvashia. The present article is based on "qualitative surveys" that can supplement the data obtained by quantitative methods and expand and give greater precision to results published earlier. The respondents, with full justification, link getting a good-quality education to going to modern "elite schools of different types." The analysis of interviews with college and university instructors showed that the majority does give a positive rating to the quality of the training of graduates of elite educational institutions, but also mentioned the success achieved by students who had graduated from ordinary schools.
