AbstractWhat is meant by the scientific intelligentsia in this article is a group of people who possess empirically discernible features such as having a higher education and a postgraduate education and are employed in the state sector of science in this country. It is obvious that in present-day Russia there is a special social and professional group whose sense of identity with the sciences and the scientific community remains the basis for planning their goals and aims in life. For this reason, the question as to what the scientific intelligentsia in Russia represents cannot be viewed in isolation from the problems of Russian science, which has gone through a period of many collisions as a result of the breakup of the Soviet Union. The current state of the sciences is not so much a consequence of the government's goal-directed activity in that sphere as a byproduct of systemic reforms. Somehow, the sciences seem to have been forgotten. In terms of organization, the sphere of the sciences was affected by the radical transformations to a somewhat smaller degree than the other areas of professional activity were. The main science structures of academy, university and college, and sectoral science were preserved. Within the framework of this article, the author focuses on a few characteristics of the present corps of Russia's scientific organizations. (Contains 2 figures, 3 tables and 7 notes.) (ERIC).
