AbstractInformal classroom assessments remain essential tools for improving the instruction of students, even in an age of accountability testing. This article focuses specifically on Informal Reading Inventories (IRIs). Even though the growing number of commercially available IRIs has made choosing the ones most suitable for students' and teachers' needs arguably harder, little research has been devoted to making appropriate selections. The authors have therefore developed questions teachers can ask to select the best IRIs for their individual classrooms, students, and contexts. A positive result in its own right, they find, is that the process of teachers developing and asking questions while examining and selecting assessment instruments empowers them to reflect on their own values regarding what is important to their students' reading instruction and development.
