Abstract | Child performance data collected frequently in natural settings are important for monitoring progress toward short-term and long-term goals and are an essential component of instruction designed to improve outcomes for children. Organizing child performance data into graphic displays can promote the systematic use of data in educational decision making, which enhances outcomes for all students. The purpose of this article is to describe the basic elements of graphing performance data in the context of improving outcomes for young children. Directions are provided for creating graphs using a computer or paper and pencil. Graphs from vignettes are depicted and discussed throughout as illustrations of how graphs can be used in data-based decision making. Finally, consideration is given to how graphic displays of data can be used to communicate with important stakeholders in the educational process (e.g., parents, service providers, administrators).
