Abstract | The purpose of this article is to document and describe coaching conversations between literacy coaches and teachers in elementary schools that were seeing gains in students' reading achievement. Participants were drawn from literacy coaches in twenty-four Reading First schools in Minnesota. Detailed notes of the coaching conversations were transcribed and analyzed for common patterns. The patterns showed that coaches used the protocols recommended in their professional development to collect data on instruction and to structure their coaching conversations. They used the data from specific lessons to give concrete examples to draw the teachers' attention to crucial elements of the lessons. The coaches asked questions to elicit conversations with teachers instead of telling teachers what should or should not be done. The coaching conversations built connections between what the teachers were learning in their study groups, their knowledge of students' assessment data, and their implementation of research-based, effective reading instruction.
