AbstractAccreditation may be the sole opportunity for all parts of an institution to inquire together and in depth about the totality of their mission. In this chapter, the author seeks to frame the accreditation process well and defend the process with vigor and confidence. Before moving on to discuss a quite different perspective on accreditation, the author offers one argument on behalf of a process often seen as unproductively onerous. This argument is based on the observation that the pace at colleges and universities is predictably demanding. The author then shares what he has learned in serving with some frequency as a member and chair of an accreditation visiting team. He also shares what he has learned by participating in the accreditation process that has been of estimable advantage not to the colleges and universities he has visited but rather to himself. He presents some examples in which aspects of the accreditation process itself might be criticized and might be changed. The author concludes that if the accreditation process is framed positively, the process is worth it and it produces multiple benefits that continue long after and far beyond the accreditation process itself.
