Abstract | In 2006, the former Education Secretary Margaret Spellings' Commission on the Future of Higher Education released a final report on the status of American higher education. The commission painted a critical picture of American higher education as being unconcerned about escalating costs, arrogant, and unwilling to change. University sectors responded to the Spellings Commission by developing a Voluntary System of Accountability (VSA) for public institutions and the University and College Accountability Network (U-CAN) for independent institutions. The two systems have continued to develop and, in particular, provide valuable consumer information for students and families. However, neither VSA nor U-CAN provides a complete model or framework for community college accountability. In this article, the author explains why it is difficult for community colleges to create a complete accountability framework. (ERIC). |
