Abstract | Teacher-educator and researcher Daniel L. Kohut suggests in "Musical Performance: Learning Theory and Pedagogy" that there are many problems that result from the way music teachers often teach. Most teachers focus on the process, not the goal. The Natural Learning Process that Kohut advocates is the same process that young children use when they first learn to walk. The Natural Learning Process works because learning is an activity as natural as breathing. This article describes the five steps involved in the Natural Learning Process. These are: (1) Observation; (2) Mental Imagery; (3) Imitation; (4) Trial and Error; and (5) Practice. Teaching suggestions relating to this process are also described.
