| Abstract | In the previous English-Language Learner (ELL) column, we addressed the first of four complementary components aimed at highlighting quality instruction for ELLs. The first in the series focused on the role of explicit code and comprehension instruction for ELLs. In that column we reminded readers of the importance of providing code instruction alongside comprehension instruction to ELLs. In this column we add to the previous column by addressing the importance of creating language-rich instruction for ELLs. It is our contention that classrooms that are language-rich are ideal contexts for meeting the needs of ELLs. How to create such an environment is the focus of this column. (As Provided). |
