AbstractJonathan Haidt remembers reading "Metaphors We Live By", the influential book that George P. Lakoff, a professor of linguistics and cognitive science at the University of California at Berkeley, wrote with Mark L. Johnson, a professor of philosophy at the University of Oregon. The book drew on cognitive science, psychology, linguistics, and philosophy to explore how metaphors, often unconsciously, play a pervasive role in everyday life, governing people's language, thought, and action. Haidt is writing a book on morality, "The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion". Working on the book with Jesse Graham, a graduate student at Virginia, he has developed a model for understanding the distinct moral systems held by conservatives and liberals. This article discusses the contentions forwarded by Haidt in his book. (ERIC).
