Abstract	Melissa P. Deputy, a 49-year-old mother of five and a community-college student, has long harbored desires to run for public office. Deputy decided to nurture her dreams of entering politics by attending a five-day program at Rutgers University earlier this month intended to encourage undergraduate women to run for elected office. Rutgers has held the annual event, the National Education for Women's Leadership program, since 1991 to try to redress the lopsided gender imbalance among politicians. Since the program started, 15 other colleges and universities in other states have adopted the program with Rutgers' help, and organizers at those institutions stay in touch. Due to the youth of the program and its graduates (women tend to enter politics later in life than men), only 7 of the 83 who answered a recent survey have, to date, run for elective office. But, Deputy points out, improving leadership skills is a first step. (ERIC).
