Abstract	One of the successes of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) has been to recognize the importance of advice and guidance to adults on courses as well as those wanting to access provision. Information, advice and guidance (IAG) matters: it helps people to overcome barriers to learning. It enables adults to identify what learning is right for them. It can equip them with the skills to make and act upon decisions about future learning. It develops their awareness and understanding of their own interests, skills, abilities and aspirations. So it is good news that additional funding to the tune of at least 50 million British Pounds is to be available in 2010-2011 to support full implementation of the proposed new "adult advancement and careers service". However, the deal is that IAG services will have to be reshaped, so that that they are better able to meet the diverse needs of all adults, wherever they learn or intend to learn. In this article, the authors say a massive increase in budget for IAG should be good news for adult learners, but, as ever, the devil is in the detail of implementation. They discuss several issues and concerns that remain to be resolved while the new service is in its design stage and suggest that in order for the new service to succeed, it needs to be based on both sound evidence and a clear understanding of the needs of all participants.
