Abstract | There were a few raised eyebrows when the Association of Colleges (AoC) appointed Martin Doel, an Air Commodore with almost 30 year's service in the Royal Air Force (RAF) but little direct experience of college culture, as its new Chief Executive. As he prepares to take the helm next month, Doel, while acknowledging the challenges ahead, is unfazed. His experience in directing training and education for the three armed forces across the Ministry of Defence, including the development of a skills strategy in response to the Leitch Review, has taught him to be adaptable and his passion for "education and its ability to transform lives" is, he believes, highly transferable. In this article, the author profiles Martin Doel, the RAF air commodore who is soon to take over the reins at the Association of Colleges. At 51, Doel had four years to go before mandatory retirement from the Airforce. He wanted to remain in education and training and was up for a challenge, and when the job at the AoC came up he had no doubts about the contribution he could make. Doel's first priority once he is in post will be to get around the regions, visiting colleges and meeting principals and governors. (ERIC). |
