| Abstract | Because critical thinkers are highly prized, both within the educational setting and in the professional world, colleges and universities overwhelmingly claim they pursue the teaching of critical thinking (CT) skills. Though the development of CT may be a widespread objective among institutions of higher education, how well it is achieved appears variable across institutions. This may be related in part to the fact that so little is known about how CT is actually developed in students. College faculty, who are largely charged with teaching CT to students, receive little to no training and guidance in meeting this important educational objective. To enable the educational institutions and the people who work there to be better informed and equipped to develop this valued skill in students, greater insight into the educational conditions and processes surrounding CT development is needed. This study aims to expand understanding of this topic by studying the educational context of a school that is seemingly very effective in fostering students' CT skills. Study results suggest that students are more apt to engage in CT, and thus grow in CT, when professors actively foster an intellectual ethos that enhances students' disposition toward CT. (ERIC). |
