Abstract | "Identity as a Stimulus for Studio Practice" was developed as a summer university component of post-graduate courses provided by Bretton Hall College's arts education extension in Israel. It involved the Israeli students in reconsidering notions of identity: interrogating the limitations of fixed notions of identity and engaging in a process of re-constructing their selves in a more pluralistic manner, embracing a range of identities. As the article demonstrates, the theme of identity proved particularly demanding and effective for these students. Their responses to the course and the theme, expressed in written reviews and self-analyses, are the basis of this article. They illustrate the difficulties and complexities involved in the process of "erasure" required in re-thinking identity, demonstrating the inherent issues in navigating the interval between reversal and emergence, and the value of developing a "becoming" sense of identity.
