Abstract	As the field of program evaluation has evolved, there has been a proliferation of approaches to the craft, each with a different conceptualization of the role the evaluator plays in relation to the program, organization, and practitioners with whom he or she works. A few recent conceptualizations of evaluator role include that of a "critical friend," an educator who fosters dialogue, reflection, and inquiry, a member of the program team providing an evaluation perspective, and an advocate for social change. In nonformal education, with its highly variable program contexts and nontraditional approaches to teaching and learning, some of these alternative evaluator roles are well suited to programs embarking on formal evaluation projects. This article details the wide variety of roles that an evaluator may need to play when evaluating nonformal education programs. (ERIC).
