Abstract	The underfunding of public education over the years has forced schools and school communities to compensate in various ways: door-to-door fundraising campaigns, advertising revenue, exclusive marketing contracts, and seeking donations or handouts from the private sector. Although numerous stories have been gathered ranging from the mundane to the absurd, evidence of the ways in which private money is filtering into public schools has been largely anecdotal. In an attempt to put numbers to the stories and to provide some quantitative context to the issue, the Canadian Teachers' Federation, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, and the "Federation des syndicats de l'enseignement" (affiliated with the Quebec-based Centrale des syndicats du Quebec) designed and distributed the first national survey to collect data on the degree to which Canadian elementary and secondary public schools rely on outside funding sources, including advertising, fundraising, user fees, and partnerships and sponsorships. The study's findings, as presented and analyzed in the report "Commercialism in Canadian Schools: Who's Calling the Shots?," were released in mid-May to sustained media and public interest.
