Abstract | For whatever reasons, whether state and local curriculum requirements, mandated assessments, or other political forces, textbook authors have elected to include Christianity and the Religious Right in their presentations of U.S. history. Therefore, a major concern is the impressions authors create that shape the way students understand and view the role of contemporary Christianity and such related topics as President Carter's faith, "televangelism," and the political presence of the Religious Right. In this article, the author states his conclusions from a review of textbooks' treatment of these subjects and offers suggestions to teachers for developing their students' complex understandings of the role that religion plays in individual lives and shapes and influences the political, social, and economic aspects of the country.
