Abstract | Though the advent of collective bargaining represents a significant development in the history of American education, most research and commentary about public schools focuses on other matters. It is a curious omission, especially after nearly five decades of extraordinary union growth. As the authors assessed its impact for this essay, they concluded that collective bargaining is taking public education in an unsustainable direction. Rather than watching it fall on its own, bringing the education system tumbling down with it, the authors propose fixing it. The bargaining process needs to be more open, so the public can see how it affects public schools. The public also needs more alternatives to the methods currently used. (Contains 1 figure.)
