| Abstract | With the explosion of technology, librarians are not the only ones who sometimes feel that reading has taken a backseat as a recreational activity. Readers are not reading like they used to. However, while overall readership is down in almost every demographic group, African-Americans, a faction traditionally considered reluctant readers, are experiencing a growth in readership with the explosion of urban fiction. Attracting both male and female readers, this genre is one of the hottest trends in publishing right now. By highlighting urban fiction, librarians can attract some of our hardest-to-reach students. These tales of street culture go by many names: urban fiction, street lit, hip hop lit, ghetto fiction, and gangsta lit. In this article, the author recommends to use the name "hip hop lit" since it is the term with which teens are most familiar. Like hip hop lyrics, the genre reflects the culture of the streets set in the urban world of hustlers, gang members, thugs, wannabe rappers, and their girlfriends (young mamas). The most extreme of these gritty tales can be easily identified by the violence, sex, hustling, and crime. At their best, the stories are an honest depiction of the struggle to have, where crime is a constant temptation. (ERIC). |
