Abstract | In light of their historical role in African American communities, faith-based organizations are uniquely positioned to offer substance use prevention programs to urban African American youth. This article describes the efforts of a university-based program to provide training and technical assistance to faith-based organizations in the development and implementation of substance use prevention activities. Occurring over a three-year period, the activities were assessed using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Results indicate that one-third of the faith-based participants had successfully implemented a substance use prevention program; another third were in the process of developing a program; and the final third had not begun to do so. Key characteristics associated with successful program development and implementation are discussed along with recommendations for future community efforts. (Contains 3 tables.) (Author). |
