Abstract | The purpose of this article is to present the perceptions of disaffiliated white middle school boys in a rural setting. In this article, the authors discuss the results and implications of a qualitative research study, examining how these boys perceive school as responding, or not responding, to their needs. Five critical needs of students are discussed: (1) a need for friendship; (2) a need for "good grades;" (3) a need for creation; (4) a need for caring teachers; and (5) a need for choice. The authors also discuss supportive strategies for middle grades teachers to improve teaching and learning in their classrooms, and these are: (1) Understand the developmental needs of students; (2) Build bridges between students; (3) Analyze classroom movement and talk; (4) Enhance student ownership in lesson and unit design; (5) Help students find relevance; and (6) Recognize all students for academic accomplishments.
