AbstractDuring his own student experience, it was an especially gifted teacher that moved the author, and gave him a sense of direction, a direction which he refers to as self-discovery that would characterize his own pursuit of an education. What motivated him to postphone retirement, is the freedom to teach in ways that he feels are effective and that produce results, rather than ways imposed or mandated by a system external to education. As a teacher in private, parochial, and or independent schools, he shares the same sentiments with his fellow teachers, of valuing of the autonomy that allows them to experience as professionals. How they take advantage of time is a major consideration. Since their schools are less likely to adopt a lockstep curriculum, their teachers can be more creative in the implementation of lessons that can expand or contract according to students' needs, abilities, or interests. Among other things, he tells how he has found a home with National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and through English Journal and attendance at over thirty-five Annual Conventions and Spring conferences, he has had the opportunity to shape his classroom practices with the best practices that the national conversation can provide.
