Abstract | As elementary social science methods instructors, the authors observed a need in their student population for instructional methods that would engage students in the content, process, and values of geography instruction. Their initial purpose was to create an instructional model that pre-service teachers could adapt and use in their future classrooms. In this article, they discuss an activity they created, the Dog Tales Project--a student-centered project that encompasses a multi-disciplinary approach to learning mapping strategies, technological media literacy skills, and cross-curricular instruction--to meet their students' needs as elementary classroom teachers. They present steps on how to create a Dog Tales Project. (Contains 1 figure and 3 notes.) (ERIC). |
