Abstract | Ordinary citizens, politicians, and economists alike regularly ask how the economy is doing. With a highly polarized electorate and media to match, it has become harder to get an honest answer. Social educators should understand the complexity of such a question--and the subtlety of the answers--as they approach the topic themselves. The American economy is doing quite well by most measures; with the Gross Domestic Product that has been growing smartly since its last downturn in 2001. Yet, millions of people report that they are feeling economic distress. In this article, the author tries to explain why Americans are living in what the Wall Street Journal calls the "Rodney Dangerfield economy" (named after the comedian who "got no respect") by presenting four explanations, some of which are complementary and some are contradictory.
