Abstract | Based on public opinion, public schools have never made the kind of dramatic, positive impact on the lives of the poor that it originally intended. In order to assess whether public schools are effective or not, the author attempts to answer several questions. These questions include: (1) Is school a sorting mechanism?; (2) Is public education a business? (3) What is a "whole" person? (4) What does "democratic process" mean? (5) Does school size preclude success? (6) Are credentials the point of schooling? (7) Should schools make the public better? and (8) Does money motivate teachers? Based from the answers to these questions, the author believes that public schools are effective. (ERIC). |
