Abstract | This article presents the report of a survey conducted to study the following four issues: (1) how the marketization of education for migrant children came about; (2) the basic school situation, including distribution, operators, conditions, curricula, and general characteristics; (3) teachers and teaching at the schools, including teaching contingent, curricula, and teacher-student relationships; and (4) basic circumstances of the students, including their composition, student relationships, parent-children relationships, and relationships with the communities. The survey indicates that the main channels for schooling open to the migrant children in Beijing are: (1) temporary student status at public schools; (2) schooling at private "aristocratic" schools; or (3) schooling at simple schools for migrant children. This study is directed at the third type--schools for migrant children, also called schools for children of migrant workers--and their students. Several methods of data collection were used in this survey, including questionnaires, interviews, focus group interviews, observations, and documentary analysis.
