Abstract | This article discusses how fictional works can give a purposeful context and an appropriate venue for developing essential social studies concepts in middle-school students. The author uses the example of a National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) notable book, "Jason's Gold" that blends history with story to become historical fiction--drawing enough from life that students can visualize people, places, and environments and adding enough creativity and plot that readers see connections between events, attitudes, and dreams of then and now. It also enables students to understand that their own actions and decisions affect others and project their conceptions of citizens' roles in society. (ERIC). |
