AbstractTeaching music is hard work. Learning what it really takes to teach music is often even harder. New music educators need and deserve mentors' support. Those of mentors who care about their profession and the young professionals who join their ranks should continue to look for effective approaches to help sustain and nurture these new careers. Mentoring certainly holds promise as one such approach, and mentoring programs that offer such support are growing across the country. Most states require some sort of support program for beginning teachers. From Connecticut, where all new teachers participate in the highly structured "Beginning Educator Support and Training (BEST)" program, to Hawaii, where new teachers are supported by a very tight-knit yet more informal mentoring community, the term mentor seems to be an ever-increasing part of their vocabulary. If mentoring is to be more than just a professional buzzword, then they must seek a better understanding of what mentoring truly is and what makes it truly work. The purpose of this article is to highlight some qualities of effective mentoring and offer some guidelines for developing successful mentoring connections.
