Abstract | In this article, the author discusses the risks administrators take on a daily basis. He starts the article by describing the feeling a young boy has at a dance when faced with the fear of asking a girl to dance in the hopes that he won't be turned down. He compares that feeling to the feeling an administrator has when faced with every-day challenges. He stresses that administrators do not have the option of hanging back, testing the waters, deciding whether or not to join the dance. He explains that administrators do not have a choice. They face enormous tasks every day in an environment that is not always supportive. They are held accountable for reaching mandated goals and ensuring the success of all children regardless of whether they have the resources they need to succeed. The author, a school administrator himself, states that administrators take risks every day because they know they need to move their organizations forward, becoming strong advocates for children and for public education.
