Abstract | In this brief paper, the author suggests some methods that conference chairs can use to ensure that conference sessions run smoothly: (1) Give each presenter a signal when there are five minutes left to speak; (2) Let presenters know that the time allotted is probably going to be even shorter than they anticipate; (3) Encourage presenters to test their technology ahead of time; (4) Tell presenters that, rather than planning on delivering the full text of a written paper, it will be better to summarize the paper and then hand out copies to those who request them; (5) Do not allow the five-minute warning to be an approximation -- "Time's up means time's up."; (6) If you are not only the chair of the session but also a participant, speak last rather than first; and (7) Let the audience members know that they are expected to ask a question, not deliver another lecture.
