| Abstract | Ever since the charter school movement became big news, Anne C. Lewis has refrained from writing about it very much because it seemed more like covering each hit in a Ping-Pong game. As study and counter-study rolled off the presses and into the press releases, the substance became less and less relevant. Each new study was always sure to be followed by a well--publicized hit from another direction. Now, there is another candidate to replace the Ping-Pong game of charter school reporting. It is math education in the United States, which has received blow after blow from recently released studies on top of the continuing ferment about a host of issues--too much or too little arithmetic, calculators or no calculators, problem solving versus calculation, and the perennial problem of unqualified math teachers. One's eyes get bleary watching the game. This article contains a brief review of what the public could have gleamed from recent headlines. (ERIC). |
