| Abstract | During the season of political campaigns scores of bumper stickers, posters, and other items with slogans supporting one candidate or another suddenly appear and quickly multiply around neighborhoods and towns, with stickers plastered on cars, and posters hanging in windows, or posted in front yards. From George Washington to George W. Bush, politicians have used such memorabilia to capture the attention of voters for centuries. In this month's "Teaching with Documents", a regular department of "Social Education," suggested teaching activities include providing students with examples of political campaign memorabilia featured in this article, and asking the following questions: (1) Who created this material? (2) For what purpose? (3) When was it created, and how do you know? (4) Do any of the items contain slogans? (5) Is their meaning clear? and (6) Why do you think certain formats, colors, or designs were chosen? Further suggestions are to encourage students to create their own campaign item promoting one of this year's candidates. (ERIC). |
