AbstractIt is often said that university professors do not really know what is going on in the classroom because it has been a long time since they taught in a public school. However, in teacher education programs that are certified by national accreditation agencies, faculty must maintain contact with the public schools by engaging in a variety of teaching activities, usually requiring twenty to fifty hours of instruction. In this article, the author shares some of the insights he gained during his return to public school teaching. Teaching for nine weeks each in two different schools (one middle school, one high school), the author gained insight into today's education process, as well as a sense of what things were similar and what was different from when he first began his teaching career 25 years ago.
