Abstract | Argues that "academic language" must be integrated into the English-as-a-second Language (ESL) curriculum from the beginning. Argues that the "ESL Standards for Pre-K-12 Students" (TESOL 1997) provides teachers with a scope for language acquisition skills for limited English proficient students, providing structure and guidance while increasing students' academic success. Shows how the Standards can be implemented in the classroom. (SR) |
