Abstract | Presents a case study of the study of French at the University of Tel Aviv as an illustration of the cultural attitude toward foreign language learning. Knowledge of a foreign language elevates the student socially as the possessor of symbolic capital, establishing social differentiation between the possessors of that capital and others.
