Abstract | The 1979 agreement in the engineering industry was a watershed in British industrial relations. It seems very likely that the significance of the 39-hour week is that it is the beginning of a series of reductions in the basic working week. The authors argue that 39 hours is an awkward figure in daily or weekly schedules. (SSH) |
