AbstractIn this article, the author offers a perspective on why humans like music and what it means for music education. The author builds his discussion around the following five basic premises: (1) since the dawn of civilization, humans have used their voices and the musical instruments they invented to express emotions in sounds that vary in pitch, volume, and rhythm; (2) because humans seek to understand the environment and to know where they came from, humans like to create stories and pass them on to others; (3) due to a link in the human brain between the auditory system and the motor system, humans tend to move their bodies in response to music by, for example, tapping their feet, moving their heads, or dancing; (4) in an effort to understand the events that unfold around them, humans seek to recognize patterns, and try to anticipate future events based on past experiences; and (5) humans enjoy experiences that are familiar, but also desire new experiences from time to time.
