AbstractThe "College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards" (NCSS, 2013) places inquiry at the center of good social studies teaching and learning. Instead of social studies courses that emphasize rote memorization through the use of textbooks and lecture-based instruction, the C3 Framework asks teachers to reframe their content and instruction around important, compelling questions that they grapple with as citizens and within the social studies disciplines. "Making Inquiry Possible" (makinginquirypossible.org) is an effort to help educators understand how the collaborative efforts of teachers, their students, and supportive administrators can make inquiry-based curriculum and instruction achievable. Teachers who shift to inquiry need supportive colleagues, ongoing professional learning opportunities, and time to reflect on and improve their practices. Students need time and support to adjust to new expectations and to new ways of expressing their ideas. The Making Inquiry Possible (MIP) Project features four films that are accessible free of charge and show and tell educators about recent efforts in Kentucky to shift towards inquiry-based instruction in social studies. The project includes online professional development materials to accompany the documentaries that are designed to facilitate discussions about the triumphs and challenges that teachers, students, and districts experience as they implement the new standards. This article introduces the project and its component parts: the films, the professional learning modules, the connections to C3 Teachers, and the website that houses the project. It also previews plans for expanding the site and the films and new efforts to help teachers and schools strengthen their inquiry cultures. (ERIC).
