Abstract | This research study focuses on finding the key to success for Indigenous students pursuing a university degree at a mainstream institution of higher education. The subject groups are students who are currently attending a mainstream university, mainstream university dropouts, and mainstream university graduates. Successful graduates who have been interviewed displayed the common theme of having a home-like support system while attending college. The students studied have lived the entirety of their lives on an Indian reservation before attending a mainstream university. The conclusions of this research can give practical applications for aiding Native American students to improve their academic success. Students who create communities mimicking their reservations' communities find success in the mainstream university system. (ERIC). |
