Abstract	Since 2014, India's Swaach Bharat Mission (Clean India), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has garnered international attention for dispersing millions of toilets across the subcontinent. The five-year campaign goes much further, though, in the educational realm, where it attempts to make sustainable change through the country's national school curriculum. Alongside the initiative's goal of an open-defecation free India by 2019, Swaach Bharat's focus on the education system aims to involve teachers, students, and the wider school community in changing behaviors and norms. Through these efforts, the Government of India hopes to redefine how its citizens view and treat their environment. This article discusses the relationship between a clean India and clean schools. The values of the Clean India Mission are present in both formal and informal curricula. Peer interactions also present an opportunity for the initiative to double down on its messaging. The Government of India also has taken the opportunity to integrate girls and women within the scope of the Clean India Mission. The Clean India Mission has been designed to empower women within their communities, as well as change attitudes and misconceptions about their capacity to contribute to society. India's Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation encourages the promotion of gender-sensitive outreach, specifically targeting boys and men. From this effort, the Clean India Mission hopes to transform the role of girls and women from one of homemaker to one of changemaker. (ERIC).
