Abstract | This article contains four parts. It begins with a description of the Child Development Project, a research project aimed at discovering ways to integrate a focus on students' social and moral development in elementary schools. Then we describe the project's mixed results in helping teachers successfully apply its approach to classroom management, called "Developmental Discipline." Next, the successful use of Developmental Discipline by one teacher, Laura Ecken, is described, along with the gradual moral and academic growth of her students. Lastly, faculty from two teacher preparation programs describe their use of Laura's example to support their students' ability to manage their classrooms in ways that foster social/moral and academic growth.
