Abstract | Teaching leadership skills is an important goal for many schools, both within the curriculum and beyond it. The traditional definition of a leader has been based on a hierarchy, with levels, a chain of command, and a "top dog." Yet other definitions exist, and for girls and women a redefined view incorporates an alternative concept of leadership. This article examines eight schools and the programs they have in place. The schools described are girls' schools, each of which can be considered at the forefront in the leadership development of girls and in girls' education. This article discusses four components of leadership training: (1) developing skills in planning and problem solving; (2) increasing the ability to assess oneself and one's relationship to others; (3) giving students experience in playing guiding and mentoring roles; and (4) understanding and dealing with community problems.
